It's no secret that I am in a same sex relationship with a wonderful woman named Sarah and have been married for 2 years. We have 2 beautiful daughters together, one who was conceived together through IUI and birthed by me, one carried by Sarah, and Sarah carried a surrogacy baby last year. The question we get the most (after who carried what kid) is "How did that happen?" As I'm sure most of you know you need sperm to make a baby, and SUPRISE, we don't have that! Before I talk about how we had our babies let me just say that there are SO MANY ways to make a family and no one way is right or wrong. A family could be created through adoption, IUI, IVF, or surrogacy a family is created by love. My wife and I talked for a while about what we wanted our family to look like and what was the right option for us.
In our family I wanted to carry a child, so we purchased sperm through a sperm bank... The process was almost like you see in the movies. We had ideas about what characteristics we wanted for the other half of the DNA that would make our baby. I knew I wanted to find someone that looked like Sarah so that maybe our child would have some of her same characteristics... Brunette with green eyes and hopefully a little less attitude (my genes have plenty of that we don't need more). Every sperm bank is different and shows different amounts of information for the donors. Some will show adult and baby pictures with no names, others will show baby pictures and not adult pictures. We purchased the sperm, sent it to the fertility doctors and were able to do a medicated IUI cycle to conceive our youngest. I can talk more about that in a later post or reach out and I can talk about what the IUI process is like.
There are so many other ways to add to a family, all of them are wonderful options. No matter how your family identifies or how you decide to start or add to your family YOU ARE VALID and YOU ARE WORTHY!
