This is how the conversation goes every time...
"So, what do you do?"
"I'm a labor and postpartum doula."
"Oh cool......."
Insert strange pause where they are trying to figure out if I said something different or if they have ever heard that word before
"Um... what's a doula?"
I LOVE this question, mainly because I love talking about what I do. Educating people about birth and postpartum is my passion and any chance I can get to talk about it... I'm taking it!
My textbook answer is a doula is a person who supports women through pregnancy, labor and postpartum through physical, emotional and educational support. In my opinion though it's SO MUCH MORE!
A doula is there to support not just the birthing person but their support person as well. A doula is ready to serve whether that's a cool washcloth to a laboring mom's head, a backrub when the back labor starts, the person holding your other leg and telling you "That's it momma, add to it!". A doula is the person that you ask the weird questions to, you know the ones you google and then delete the search history, so no one knows about the thing.... Why am I peeing my pants when I sneeze? Did I just pee or did my water break? What is with this discharge? Is it normal to have a booger come out from... ya know... down there?? A doula is your friend, your supporter and your secret weapon all in one.
As a Labor and Postpartum Doula, it's my job to support women through one of the toughest challenges that we as women face. Empower them, teach them, and come back for the next one.
